“Training”
Years of training made the process instinctual. Slap. The magazine was firmly in place. It was always in place but he still checked every time. Pull. The charging handle slid smoothly. The first thing you learned was how to care for your weapon. Observe. The chamber was empty – no obstructions visible. Release. He let go of the charging handle. One case of bolt bite – long ago – and he had never ridden the handle again. Tap. The bolt was fully forward and locked. Shoot. Training made it instinct… even when the targets were no longer paper people. He squeezed the trigger. |
