“Lucky”

Pain slithered outward from the back of his neck and curled itself around his brain.

Jack welcomed the pain.

Pain equaled life.

He lived. Against all odds fortune or fate or some whim of the universe had spared him – again. Pure luck.

He shut his eyes blocking out the familiar sight of the infirmary walls and let the headache rage behind his eyelids.

It was easy to focus on the physical pain.

Far easier to let the pain continue than to accept the knowledge that any relief from it would come from someone else’s hands.

Doc hadn’t been so lucky.
