About
Hoodat Whatzit
Well, what's there to tell
other than the fact that I'm another scifi fan with apparently too much
time on her hands? I've always been a fan of science fiction. I usually
give every new scifi show at least a chance and Stargate was no exception.
I was lucky enough to catch the first episode during a free weekend of
Showtime and it was enough to thoroughly set the hook in me.
So I've been a fan of SG1
since the start but it took five years for me to "join" in the
online fandom fun. I wrote a few fics and got a very nice invite to check
out the Yahoo group Jackfic. It was all downhill from there (I mean that
in a nice way, Jackfic'ers).

The
Story of the Name
Where did the pen name originate? Aside
from simply being a really cool pun and alias there really is a link to
the Stargate Universe with the name Hoodat Whatzit! You may already be
familiar with the Bill McCay Stargate novels: Rebellion, Retaliation,
Retribution, Reconnaissance, and Resistance. If you have read them, then
you know where I got the Hoodat Whatzit from- I stole (uh... make that
borrowed) it from the fourth book!
Hoodat is the name given to an unseen enemy by Marine's assisting the
displaced Abydonians in the colonization of their new planet. Whatzit
is the name given to another pesky critter that causes problems for the
colonists. I read this and didn't think anything of it- until about three-o-clock
that morning when I woke up with the idea to make it a screen name. To
be honest- I was surprised it wasn't already taken!
If you haven't read the McCay novels, I recommend them because they are
great fun. I consider them to be officially published alternate universe
stories. A world where Hathor is Ra's successor, neither Sha'uri, Daniel's
ex-wife (Yes, that's what I said... Guess that happily ever after thing's
not working out for them, huh?) nor Skaara have become hosts, and the
people of Abydos are forced to flee to Earth. The downside? No Teal'c,
no Captain Carter (Sorry shippers!), no Sg-1!

Why Do I Do This?
Good question? Is boredom an excuse? I
loved the Stargate movie. I know with some Sg-1 fans that is blasphemy
but I can't help myself. After a free weekend of Showtime, I was hooked
(Yes, I paid for Showtime just so I could watch Stargate!) and that's
when it began I suppose. It's great stuff! No pesky Prime Directives for
our intrepid gang of Gaters!
And what a gimmick! Even when I saw the movie it just screamed "Sequel
coming soon!" An infinite number of possible worlds to visit that
can be reached almost instantaneously? Did anyone really think Abydos
was the only place connected to Earth by the Stargate? And once Sg-1 came
along we got a group of ready-made heroes to boot! A scruffy, angst-ridden,
wise-cracking Colonel. A wide-eyed, sometimes-bumbling but always-well
meaning, ideological archeologist. A brilliant, beautiful (at least Jack
thinks so), able to kick-butt as well as any man, astrophysicist, Doctor/Captain.
And, of course, an enigmatic, wise, often-misunderstood and taken for
granted, alien ally to help in the fight against anyone or anything in
the universe who wants to push us homo-sapiens around.
Once a week wasn't enough time spent with these people, so I started reading
fan fiction. For the past few years that's what I've been doing- reading
the stuff. I never even considered writing any myself until just recently.
After seeing Tangent for about the third or fourth time and getting angry
every time it ended too soon I wrote my first story, "You Should've
Brought Aspirin." The responses I got from readers only served to
set the hook deeper. It's addictive. Of course, several stories later,
here I am putting up a web site. Now I get to spend almost as much time
formatting stories and finding graphics to go along with them as I do
writing them in the first place!
So here it is! I hope you enjoy the site. If you have even half the fun
browsing my site as I've had creating it then I won't be disappointed.
